Start with Warm Woods
Cottage-core and wood go hand-in-hand. Think: open shelving, butcher-block counters, or even a reclaimed tabletop. Natural wood instantly adds warmth and texture to any kitchen.
In this makeover, I upcycled an antique hutch, separating the top cabinet from the bottom. The top cabinet was secured to the wall, allowing the bottom to provide more countertop space for food prep etc. The lower cabinet top was replaced with a solid live-edge oak slab that was milled right on the property.
To refinish the slab, I removed the live edge from the sides and cut it to length. Using a black quick-set CA glue, I filled any small gaps in the board, sanded and added a natural food-safe oil to the top.
The secret? Let the imperfections show. Knots, small scratches, and rustic finishes all add to that lived-in, timeworn look that defines the cottage-core aesthetic.
If you can’t swap out big surfaces, start small:
Floating wood shelves
A wall-mounted spice rack
A simple wooden cutting board display
2. Choose Soft, Earthy Colours
Cottage-core colour palettes are inspired by nature: soft yellows, sage greens, creamy whites, and warm neutrals.
For this kitchen, a rustic yellow cabinet ended up being the perfect dose of sunshine. It paired beautifully with white walls and natural wood elements.
Pro Tip:
Choose one neutral base (like cream or light green) and one accent tone (like dusty rose or faded blue). Together, they’ll make your kitchen feel grounded yet cheerful.
And please: prime first! It’s truly a crime not to prime before painting cabinets. You’ll get smoother coverage and longer-lasting results.
3. Let There Be (Soft) Light
Lighting makes or breaks the cottage-core mood. Swap harsh overhead lights for warm lighting that feels natural and calming.
In the cottage kitchen, I installed a vintage schoolhouse pendant light, which instantly softened the space and tied in the brass details.
Layer your lighting for that cozy glow:
Vintage Style Sconce light as your main overhead light source.
Table lamp or plug-in sconce for ambiance
Under-shelf LED lights for function
And if you’re lucky enough to have windows, let natural light flood in. Sheer curtains or simple linen shades will add a delicate touch.
4. Maximize Storage with Cottage Charm
Small kitchens thrive on smart storage — and cottage-core thrives on charm.
Use your walls as functional decor. I built a two-tiered spice rack to keep everyday ingredients within reach while freeing up counter space. Hooks, small shelves, and baskets make a big difference without sacrificing style.
Easy ideas for cozy kitchen organizing:
Hang mugs or utensils on vintage hooks
Use woven baskets for snacks (like chips or bread)
Add decorate vases or ceramic pockets for small items
For any cook wear on display, use natural materials like wood - their functional and adds decorative ambiance.
5. Add Whimsical Cottage Accents
The charm is in the details. Layer cozy, vintage-inspired accents that tell a story.
In the cottage makeover, I added:
A brass paper-towel holder
A hanging onion stack near the window
A deep red rug to warm up the floor
A vintage table lamp for a gentle evening glow
A faux garland cascading down the opening area
Cute decorative iron hooks
floral aluminum plates onto the walls for added cottage flare
Mixing brass, wood, glass, and soft textiles gives your kitchen that curated, cozy feel. And don’t forget - scents and sounds matter too! A pot of herbs, a candle, or even a quiet playlist adds to the overall experience.
6. Keep Function at the Heart of It
Cottage-core isn’t about clutter… it’s about creating a space that feels intentional, peaceful, and lived-in!
Design around your daily routines. Make your coffee station accessible, your spices easy to grab, and your prep zones well-lit.
The goal? A kitchen that supports slow mornings, cozy meals, and everything in between.
