How to Build a Garden Arbour (with Planter Boxes)

Looking to add charm and structure to your backyard? Here's a straightforward guide to building a custom garden arbour using cedar 2x4s, complete with planter boxes.

Materials

  • Cedar 2x4s

  • Wood screws

  • Drill + drill bits

  • Saw (miter or circular)

  • Measuring tape

  • Scrap wood (for spacers and support beams)

  • Wire fencing (optional)

  • Cedar boards for planter boxes (16 per box)

  • 2x2s for corner supports

Step 1: Build the First Frame

  1. Plan your dimensions for height and width.

  2. Cut and assemble one full side of the arbour using cedar 2x4s. This will help you visualize the final size and make any adjustments early on.

  3. Pre-drill screw holes to avoid splitting the wood.

  4. Screw pieces together to form a sturdy rectangular frame.

Step 2: Duplicate the Frame

  1. Once satisfied with the first frame, cut matching pieces for the second side.

  2. Assemble the second frame the same way.

  3. Use clamps if needed to keep things square.

Step 3: Add Horizontal Supports

  1. Cut four 24” pieces from scrap wood for horizontal supports.

  2. Attach two supports per side, spacing the first support about 10” above any garden box or the ground (this leaves room to attach fencing or vines).

  3. Secure the top and mid-level supports to stabilize the structure.

Step 4: Build the Planter Boxes

  1. For each box, cut:

    • 8 long boards (sides)

    • 8 short boards (ends)

    • 4 corner posts from 2x2s

  2. Assemble short sides first by attaching boards to 2x2s.

  3. Add the long sides to complete the box frame.

  4. Use spacers and check grain direction to help prevent future warping.

Step 5: Final Assembly

  1. Secure the arbour frames into the ground or planter boxes, depending on your setup.

  2. Reinforce the structure with any additional supports if needed.

  3. Attach fencing or decorative elements to horizontal supports if desired.

Tips

  • Pre-drill every screw hole.

  • Don’t stress about visible fasteners—function first.

  • Use a level throughout the build to avoid leaning or wobbling.

  • Take your time on the first planter box; the second one will go much faster.

With your arbour and planter boxes complete, you’ll have a beautiful, functional feature that elevates any outdoor space.
